What's Cooking at Blatchington Mill?

Friday, 10 March 2017

Year 9 Food Tech classes are currently competing in pairs to create a summer themed menu using local produce. Overall winners will go forward to compete against local schools and the final round will be against schools in the South of England.

Fit2cook food education runs The Create & Cook Competition giving budding young cooks the opportunity to create their own menus inspired by the produce grown and produced around them. As well as nurturing young talent and developing cookery skills, The Create & Cook Competition challenges young people to explore the key issues of sustainability, seasonality and animal welfare.

There have been some amazing dishes being prepared with students really getting stuck in to the task. Dishes included a chicken curry, pizza, a delicious looking summer fruit roulade and beautifully presented stuffed peppers among many, many others! The students researched local produce and had a tasting session in school of local honey, oil, chocolate, marmalades & chutneys, sausages, cheese and more!

Fit2Cook said: ‘We have discovered so many talented young cooks over the last 8 years. We have been inspired by their imaginative menus, impressed with their cool heads under pressure and we've loved tasting their delicious food.

Food Tech teacher Mrs Whitby agreed that, ‘so far the results have been amazing!’ - We certainly have some culinary talent here at Blatch!
