Student commissions were introduced to Blatch in 2013, and developed from the student voice work done at school. What was needed was a way for students to then go further than just articulating their views on a topic – we wanted them to take direct action to improve school life.
The Student Commissioners project 2016-2017 is comprised of 24 students from across year 8 and 9 who have been selected at random to lead the projects. The reason behind the random selection is that we believe that every single student in the school could lead this project, that every single student has a valid experience of the school and can help us improve our practices.
These 24 students will now embark on an entirely student led research project into different areas of education experience and discover ways to improve. We will be working alongside Brighton University Professor Sara Bragg who is guiding us in how to research as well as working as an adviser and facilitator. We will record the journeys of each of the projects on Firefly along with the findings and ways to improve the school.
The aim of this project is to build more and more students into it until it becomes part of our standard practice and continuous development.
