Consultation - 'A Later School Day'

Tuesday, 07 March 2017

Dear Parents and Carers,

We wrote to you a few weeks ago about our consultation on the start time for the school day. We are now ready to begin collecting your thoughts and views on this idea.

The basic premise is that there seems to be an increasing consensus in education research that teenagers are not ‘wired’ to get up as early as adults in the morning. I know this won’t seem surprising to anyone who lives with a teenager, but it may be more than teenagers going to bed too late and being lazy! It’s also true that young people are all different, and whilst it may be the case that in general they find it harder than adults in the morning, some may be early risers.

The changes we are considering making in response to this are to start (and finish) school an hour later to get the best from students: 9.25am – 4pm. However, before we consider making any such change, we need to get a sense of the potential impact on staff, students, and parents. As parents and carers we would very much appreciate you taking the time to give your views on the following survey:

Please do share your views – even if simply saying whether you are in favour or not. There may be other issues you think need considering – for example how extra-curricular clubs would be affected, or how transport might be easier or more challenging.  The survey will be closed on Sunday, 23rd April 2017.

If you would like to find out a little more about the topic, please follow the links below that give an overview of the ideas behind this proposal. We’ve included a mix of news items as well, as these provide a good basic overview if you are busy and want a snapshot. There are more scientific journal articles online, but we don’t have a licence to distribute those to parents unfortunately.
